New Housing in U-City’s 3rd Ward Community!
Nonprofit Housing CDC to build first new home
University City, Missouri, October 1, 2024 ⏤ Sustainable Housing & Equitable Development (SHED) will host a groundbreaking ceremony for a new home scheduled to be constructed at 6543 Crest Avenue, University City, Missouri. The event is scheduled for October 8, 2024, at 10:30 am. at the project site. SHED’s first new home construction project will expand housing opportunities for individuals and families in the 3rd Ward of University City.
The new home on Crest Avenue which will feature energy-efficient and modern amenities, will include 1,378 square feet of living space, 3 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, and a basement. The property financing is provided by Great Southern Bank and the St Louis County Department of Human Services. The County’s funding is from the HOME Investment Partnership Program, a federal grant program administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
SHED historically has focused on volunteer home repair and maintenance services for senior and disabled homeowners in University City in partnership with local churches, educational institutions, and individuals. For almost 15 years, SHED has serviced approximately 600 homeowners under its volunteer home repair program. Most of the homeowners assisted by SHED reside in the 3rd Ward of University City. “The homes are owned primarily by minorities who are long-time residents with low-to-moderate incomes,” said Mimi Taylor-Hendrix, President of the SHED board of directors. SHED is a community-based nonprofit Community Development Corporation (CDC) and a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) focused on assisting low and moderate-income homeowners in University City, Missouri, and leading the efforts to revitalize the 3rd Ward of University City, Missouri.
The groundbreaking ceremony is open to anyone interested in attending. Homeownership provides an opportunity for a stable and safe living environment for individuals and families, creates vested residents in neighborhoods, stimulates long-term investment in residential properties, and generates an opportunity for multi-generational wealth transfer.
“SHED appreciates how important homeownership is to the stability of neighborhoods,” said Taylor-Hendrix. “SHED’s work is about more than just repairing houses; it’s about preserving the fabric of our community and ensuring that our neighbors can continue to live in safe, comfortable homes.” We believe that homeownership is a pathway to create long-term wealth.
Since 2009, SHED has partnered with volunteers from faith-based organizations and the City of University City to provide home maintenance to University City seniors and individuals with disabilities. SHED continues to work to expand its impact on the community and create quality sustainable housing. SHED partners with the University City School District to provide career pathways in the skilled trades for local high school students.
