Youth Career Development Program
Building Skills. Creating Opportunities. Strengthening Community.
SHED’s Youth Career Development Program introduces local high school students to rewarding careers in the skilled trades while helping them develop valuable workplace skills. Each summer, SHED partners with the School District of University City to provide paid work opportunities for 10–15 students from the community. Participants work alongside experienced professionals, gaining real-world exposure to construction, home repair, property maintenance, and landscaping. Rather than learning solely in a classroom, students tackle hands-on projects that make a real impact in University City neighborhoods.
Past projects have included deck construction, home improvement work, and partnerships with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity ReStore. And for many participants, the program serves as a first step toward first step toward employment, apprenticeships, or post‑secondary education. Some alumni have gone on to secure internships with the real estate department at Washington University in St. Louis, demonstrating the potential of early career exposure and mentorship.
By investing in local students today, SHED is helping build a stronger workforce and stronger community for tomorrow.
